12 sailing teams from 7 nations, top teams from the match race world rankings are competing in the Swiss Sailing League Match Race from 22. until 25. March in Locarno. After three years of abstinence, Switzerland is again host of a world class Match Race regatta. Whit the return of the monohulls to the America’s Cup this exciting discipline of duel sailing is on the raise again.
The top-class field of competitors includes the Albert Riele Swiss Match Race Team with Skipper Eric Monnin, winner of the 2017 Match Race Super League – a global matchrace circuit, which is carried out on monohull boats.
Top set skipper of the event is the present world number six, Mati Sepp from Estonia. He was only defeated by Monnin in last year’s Matchrace Germany. Maybe Locarno offers the chance for a revenge?
Additional competitors include Austrian Champion Max Trippolt, number one Russian Match Race Skipper Vladimir Lipavsky, Polands Szymon Jablkowski, Rocco Attili (ITA) and further teams from Germany, Switzerland and Italy.
A special welcome also goes to the Swiss Women Match Race Team with Skipper Alexa Bezel, ranked 11th in the 2017 Women International Match Racing Series.
The competition starts with a round robin, where each team sails against each other team. The winner of the round robins qualifies directly for the semifinals. Teams ranked two to seven will duel the competitor assigned in a drawing. The first team to score two wins progresses to the semis.
The finals are scheduled for Sunday, 25. March 2018. We expect close to shore matches, which will inspire spectators with best sailing sport.
